Hyderabad secure IPL play-off spot after washout

Sunrisers Hyderabad secured their IPL play-off spot after rain forced their match against the Gujarat Titans to be abandoned without a ball bowled in Hyderabad on Thursday.

The washout saw both teams taking a point each, which pushed Hyderabad to third in the table with 15 points.

Gujarat had been knocked out of the play-off race earlier this week after their game against Kolkata Knight Riders was also abandoned due to rain.

The weather in Hyderabad on Thursday left thousands of fans disappointed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

The game was finally called off more than two and a half hours after the scheduled start.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings, who are fourth, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru lead the hunt for the remaining playoff spot.

Curran stars for Punjab as Rajasthan lose four in row

Skipper Sam Curran starred with bat and ball as Punjab Kings beat Rajasthan Royals by five wickets for a consolation win in the Indian Premier League on Wednesday.

Chasing a tricky 145 on a sluggish pitch, Punjab depended on Curran's unbeaten 63 to achieve their target with seven balls to spare in Rajasthan's adopted home ground in Guwahati.

Left-handed Curran put on a key 63-run stand with Jitesh Sharma, who made 22, and despite losing his partner in the 16th over steered the team home to lift them from the bottom of the 10-team table.

Impact substitute Ashutosh Sharma smashed 17 and the winning run to hand Rajasthan their fourth successive defeat in this edition of the T20 tournament.

"To be very honest, we have to sit back and accept that we are going through some failures," Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson said.

"You have to find out what's not working well as a team. When you are getting to the business end, we need someone to raise their finger up and say I am going to win the game for the team. We have the players who can do that."

The loss for Rajasthan hurt their chances of a top-two finish in the league stage a day after they confirmed their play-off spot.

Rajasthan, who stay in second place with one game in hand, and table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders are the only two teams to have booked their play-off berth.

The top four teams make the play-offs, but the first and second-placed sides have the advantage of two chances to qualify for the final on 26 May in Chennai.

Punjab, who had already bowed out of the play-off race, kept the opposition down to 144-9 despite a 34-ball 48 by Riyan Parag.

Left-arm quick Curran bowled Yashasvi Jaiswal, for four, in the first over and then Samson departed for 18 off Nathan Ellis after a slow start.

Parag found Ravichandran Ashwin, who hit 28 off 19 balls, for company and the two attempted to push the scoring in their partnership of 50.

The rest of the batting faltered against a disciplined attack as Curran, fellow quick Harshal Patel and spinner Rahul Chahal took two wickets each.

INNINGS:

Proteas batter Tristan Stubbs smashed a blistering unbeaten IPL fifty as Delhi Capitals posted 208-4 in their must-win encounter against the Lucknow Super Giants.

After being sent to bat first, Delhi Capitals lost the early wicket of opener Jake Fraser-McGurk, who was caught for a duck.

A 92-run stand between Abishek Porel and Shai Hope formed before Ravi Bishnoi broke the partnership as Hope was caught by a juggling KL Rahul to depart for 38 off 27 balls.

Porel brought up his second IPL fifty and looked to see the Capitals through but the opener was caught off the bowling of Naveen-ul-Haq for 58 off 33 balls (hitting five fours and four sixes).

Stubbs continued his fine form with the bat as he brought up his third IPL half-century off 22 balls.

Stubbs and Axar Patel shared an 22-ball 50-run not out stand to take the Capitals to the 200-mark.

Stubbs, who was dropped on 52, couldn't get much of the strike in the final over and ended unbeaten on 57 off 25 balls (hitting three fours and four sixes).

Both teams need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Scores in brief:

Abishek Porel's innings comes to an end.

Naveen-ul-Haq gets the big wicket of the set opener as Porel goes in for a slog pull over to the midwicket boundary. Nicholas Pooran tosses the ball up and safely makes sure he doesn't touch the boundary rope as Porel departs for 58 off 33 balls (hitting five fours and four sixes).

However, the run-rate has dropped considerably...

RR 141/5 after 20 overs

Chennai Super Kings will be happy that they kept Rajasthan Royals to under 150 after the 18th over went for 11 runs as it looked like Parag and Jurel were about to open up. But with one over to go, in stepped Deshpande to bowl and he claimed two wickets (Dhruv Jurel 28 off 18 and then newcomer to the crease, Shubham Dubey for nought who looped to backward point where Dube lay in wait) in succession to curb any plans by the Royals to belatedly turn up the run tempo. A tight showing in the field, despite dropping Parag twice, by the hosts, who may feel positive about taking up their willows now that the heat will start abating.

Parag ended on 47 off 35 not out including one four and three sixes.

Scores in brief:

Singh! Singh! Singh! as Simarjeet gets his third in the 14th over. This time it's the captain Samju Samson (15), who goes after a full delivery and straight to Gaikwad at mid-off. The Royals will have to step on it if they want to reach a competitive looking 150.

Riyan Parag is on 29 off 22, including two 6s. Dhruv Jurel joins him at the crease.

With no wickets by the end of the powerplay, the Super Kings bowlers were getting restless, even if the Rajasthan openers weren't exactly running away with it. And so Simarjheet Singh struck in the sixth with Jaiswal (24) struggling to control a pull shot and shanking it into the welcoming hands of Giakwad, who ran in from extra cover.

Jos Buttler (21) followed in the eighth over soon after, also off the bowling of Singh, but not before he reached the auspicious milestone of 3000 runs in the IPL. Deshpande had to trot a bit to catch him at long on.

Skipper Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag are at the crease.

Kolkata down Mumbai to confirm IPL play-off berth

Spinner Varun Chakravarthy returned bowling figures of 2-17 as Kolkata Knight Riders booked their play-off spot with an 18-run win over Mumbai Indians in a rain-reduced IPL match.

Two-time champions Kolkata posted 157-7 as Venkatesh Iyer top-scored with 42 off 21 balls after being invited to bat first at their home Eden Gardens in a 16-overs-a-side match.

Bowlers combined to defend the total after Mumbai raced to 65-0 and Chakravarthy, a mystery spinner, got the big wickets of Rohit Sharma, who made 19 after coming in as impact substitute, and skipper Hardik Pandya, who was caught out for two.

Five-time winners Mumbai, who are already out of the play-off race, finished on 139-8 as Tilak Varma hit a 17-ball 32 before he fell to fast bowler Harshit Rana, who took two wickets in the last over.

Pace bowler Andre Russell also took two wickets, including that of Suryakumar Yadav, as table-toppers Kolkata got their ninth win in 12 matches to become the first team to book a play-off berth.

The top four teams will make the play-offs with the final on 26 May in Chennai.

Kolkata lost openers Phil Salt, out for six, and Sunil Narine, bowled for a duck off Jasprit Bumrah, in the first two overs and skipper Shreyas Iyer soon fell for seven.

But Venkatesh, a left-hand batsman, made Kolkata hit back with six fours and two sixes and he set the pace that was picked up by Nitish Rana and Russell in a key stand of 39.

Rana, a left-hand batter, hit 33 and Russell smashed 24 off 14 before Rinku Singh, who hit 20, and Ramandeep Singh, unbeaten 17, helped Kolkata finish on a high.

Bumrah and veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla took two wickets each.
