Plans for the Cape Town Winelands Airport outside Durbanville are progressing after South African entrepreneur and managing director of rsa.AERO Nick Ferguson announced that the private airport group had signed a 15-year agreement with German airline Lufthansa Group.
Ferguson said the airport is set to become a "destination alternate" airport for travellers in Cape Town, rivalling Cape Town International in capacity and accommodating more air traffic.
Plans for the Winelands airport include an R7-billion expansion for a Code F runway, with a length of 3 500m, to accommodate aircraft as big as an Airbus A380. This aircraft cannot be accommodated at Cape Town International.
